Men of the Wooden Walls

by Frank C. Bowen

London & New York: Staples Press, (1952).

First edition.

Book is near fine with a whisper of wear to corners, pages lightly age-toned - but otherwise are tight, clean, and intact; in a near fine dust jacket with minor wear along the top and edges, and mild uniform tanning.

A nice vintage book on colorful nautical personalities, by American author Frank Charles Bowen (1894-1957). In this, his last book, he writes about quite a motley crew of scallawags to ever grace a ship's bow: explorers, tyrants, admirals, pirates, lunatics, and patriots. Historical (or hysterical) figures like Christopher Columbus, Peter the Great, John Paul Jones (not the basist from Led Zeppelin), Admiral Farragut, Samuel Cunard, Blackbeard, Edmund Halley (the comet guy), Lord Anson, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Captain William Kidd; to name a few of the 69 total. Each has a page or so, with their nautical highlights and various accomplishments summarized in a concise and witty fashion, as only Frank could do. There is an illustration of everyone except Captain Kidd. A most entertaining and informative book on the subject.

Deep blue cloth boards with silvered-stamped titles to spine.
