During the 1984 race for the U. S. Senate seat then held by Minnesota Independent Republican RUDY BOSCHWITZ, one of the campaign issues was the amount of Federal and state income taxes paid by Boschwitz, a millionaire businessman who chose to use corporate tax loopholes to reduce his tax liability to less than most citizens of Minnesota.  Nevertheless, Boschwitz was re-elected to the U. S. Senate, defeating Minnesota Democrat-Farmer-Labor candidate JOAN GROWE.
