Manufactured in the Russian Federation (USSR) in the 1960's this is a rare men's open face Molnija pocket watch in very good condition. The case measures a generous 49.8 mm, 1.96" in diameter, excluding crown and bow and features a white dial that contrasts beautifully with black Heavy Moon hour and minute hands and bold Roman Numbers. It has a black outer chapter, and subsecond dial at 6 o'clock. The crystal is bright, and the 18 jewel movement has been serviced, winds smoothly, and keeps excellent time. The back of the case features a 3 dimensional image of the statue at the Chelyabinks Train Station.that celebrates the "Tales about Ural" honoring the revered Russian fairy tales. Stock Code: M-2 ABOUT THE MOLNIJA'S BRAND: The Molnija (Russian word for lightening) clock and watch factory was opened on November 17, 1947. The company's main customer was then the Soviet Union Department of Defense, providing them with wristwatches, pocket watches and table clocks. Unique clocks were also produced specifically for use in Soviet tanks, fighter aircraft, submarines and, eventually, spacecraft. Molnija's main product is mechanical pocket watches with military, religious and historical motifs. About 80% of the work on most of the watches is done by hand. Some Molnija movements are used in oversized men's wristwatches. The company ceased production in October 2007. However, new Molnija pocket watches are still available on the market (presumably old stock) and typically sell for between $150 and $250.
