ABOUT THIS ISSUE: ROWLAND EVANS and ROBERT NOVAK, authors of the major work on President Johnson that begins in this issue, write a political column for the Publishers Newspaper Syndicate carried by ap- proximately 130 papers. They had no privileged access to L.B.J.'s files in researching this book. Instead they relied on their own observations and on more than 200 interviews with those close to the President. . . . A zealous devotee of pop music, BRuCE JAY FRIEDMAN wrote the article on disk jockey Jerry Blavat. Friedman is best known for his novels Stern and A Mother's Kisses. A collection of his stories, titled Black Angels, has just been brought out by Simon and Schuster.... This is not the first time MYRON COPE has written about the special brand of football they play in Texas. Three years ago an article in which he suggested the University of Texas team was overrated appeared in a northern sports journal. Word reached Texas, and Cope was hung in effigy, denounced by columnists and instructed in chalked scrawls to "go home." Cover photo by SUZANNE SZASZ.
