We are pleased to offer this rare mint-y Heywood Wakefield baby buggy circa 1910-1920. The wicker is in excellent condition and has a lovely swag detail woven into the side pattern. The interior of the carriage was professionally retrofitted by a designer's upholsterer about 25 years ago. It is lined in a blue cotton fabric with a white pindot pattern and finished with self-cording and an eyelet ruffle trim. The mattress and pillow were also custom made at that time. The fabric, trim, and cording are in very good to excellent condition. We did not find any tears or stains and only a few stray threads that can be easily snipped off. There is some slight fading in some areas of the fabric but it is not very noticeable and would not show if the carriage was used to display dolls or plush animals, for example.
The previous owners actually used this family heirloom when their children were babies and it is functional. When not out for a head-turning stroll, the carriage served as a bassinet-on-wheels for a napping newborn. Afterwards it was used to display antique teddy bears in the family's home. Personally, we do not know if this item meets with current safety standards but it probably does not and we do not recommend using it except for display. It would be a lovely way to display antique dolls or a similar collection and a fantastic piece for a shop that sells dolls, baby items, or antique linens, etc.
The wicker part of the carriage measures about 41 inches high overall, 22 inches wide, and 36 inches long. (It is 48 inches long including the frame and handle.) The mattress is 23 inches long, 13.5 inches wide, and 3 inches thick. The beautifully turned wood handle is 19.5" long and the handle is about 34.5 inches off the ground. The back can be raised for a seat or lowered flat. The bonnet is also adjustable as you can see in the photos. When you lift out the mattress there is a hidden compartment in the bottom of the carriage. Perfect for storing extra essentials if you don't want to carry a diaper bag. The original brass label is on the carriage bed below the opening of the compartment and reads "Heywood Wakefield Trade Mark"
The wheels have plenty of rubber on them and ride smoothly. One of the two brake levers has broken off (see above photo) and can be re-sottered but the brakes function fine with one lever and it is not noticeable aesthetically or mechanically. The body and framework are sturdy and sound. The color is a creamy white.
It is NOT lead paint. The buggy was professionally re-finished and re-upholstered in the 1980s.
Do not hesitate. You will never find another so carefully preserved and in such wonderful, clean condition.
THIS ITEM IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR PICK-UP. Sorry, we cannot ship this. Buggy must be picked up in Central New York, between Syracuse and Binghamton, north of Cortland, east of Ithaca. We can provide a list of shippers and will do what we can to facilitate it, but buyer must make arrangements for pick-up and delivery. The Buggy weighs about 45-50 lbs. |
