This copy of Monty's Pal by Howard Small is a PB. It was published by TWB Book, Publishers in 1978. Condition: Good--pages show slight handling; the last few pages have a soft crease in them; someone blackened out a name on the top of the pages; there is a white sticker over the publisher's name on the title page (but you can still read what's underneath); covers show slight handling; small crease in the bottom corner of the front cover. Scarce title.
This is a true horse story of a range bred in Montana horse. The early chapters based on known locale and ownership told as though by Pal, of how a wild colt captured in a snow-speckled valley ended up becoming a world famous performing horse. He performed in movies circus, expositions, and fairs. Many of the amazing things he did have never been duplicated. Used in schools for 11 to 14 year olds, but recommended for all ages, especially horse lovers. His many exciting experiences and the people involved in his life, including two governors and a president, make for nostalgic reading.
"Quite possibly Mr. Small was more of a pioneer than he realized. The method he used in training by voice are those now used by animal behaviorists in communicating with the higher forms of apes.
When Howard became owner of the horse who was later known as Monty's Pal, he had had plenty of experience with horses. But he had never trained a performing horse, and as told in this book, it was really by accident that he discovered how easily he could communicate his wishes to Pal."
