Stover 9.5" x 11", 62 page hardcover with dustjacket, Published by the San Antonio Museum Association, First Edition (unstated), Copyright 1978 Published in conjunction with an exhibition of furniture by Johann Michael Jahn of New Braunfels, Texas. Johann Michael Jahn (1816-1883) came to New Braunfels in 1845 as a colonist with the German Emigration Company. He married Anna Klein Bellmer in 1850. A "Tischlermeister" or master craftsman, Jahn established a business making fine hand-crafted furniture. Active in civic affairs, he was elected one of the first alderman of the city. After Jahn's death, his son and grandson operated the business. The company continued until the 1930s. Jahn's works have been displayed locally and at the Witte Museum in San Antonio. The book not only details the works of Jahn with many great photos, but also goes into the history of just why a number of highly skilled German craftsman made the move to the new frontier of Texas in the 1840's. The book is complete and in GOOD - VERY GOOD condition with some overall wear mainly to the dustjacket which has some edgewear and is scuffed on the back cover. The original owner of the book has pasted a picture of a piece of Jahn furniture that he or she owned and written a small caption underneath. |
