Freedom Road Classic Paperback Book by Howard Fast from Pocket Books 1946
"A Truly Magnificent Historical Novel"
"Perhaps the year's most important novel, and as readable as it is significant, Freedom Road revitalizes a lost passage of history.
This is a book dealing with the Reconstruction period in South Carolina, and with an extraordinary experiment in political, intellectual, and economic brotherhood between freed slaves and poor whites.
The miracle of their achievement, as Fast unfolds it in terms of emancipated human beings of both colors, makes a story full of 'hallelujah song,' poignancy and drama, and an indictment of inhumanity everywhere.
It is peopled with full-bodied characters, and graced with a lyrical style that expertly catches the song and metaphor of Negro speech.
With Freedom Road Howard Fast reaches the top levels of contemporary American writing."
Book is in acceptable condition. General shelf and corner wear. A few white marks on the front and back cover. Some fraying along the cover edges. The spine has some issues (see photo #3). The gloss is peeling. Spine slanting. The front cover is torn separating it from the spine about 1 1/2 inches. The book as a whole is fragile. A solid reading copy.
