Irish born author, Michael James Whitty, was a journalist and a Superintendent of the Police Nightwatch in Liverpool. He acquired a reputation as a man of considerable bravery, having stopped an attack on the Vauxhall Bridewell jail whch came to be known as "The Orange Riots". He was friends with the most famous English illustrator of his day, George Cruikshank, who contributed 6 illustrations to this work.

2 volumes. 6.5" x 4". 242 (with 2 pages of advertising) + 249 pages. Original gilt-stamped maroon two tone leather boards. Marbled endpapers.
