The year is 1977 and high school graduate Phoebe O'Connor (Jordana Brewster) is about to start university. However, she is still haunted by the death of her older sister, Faith (Cameron Diaz), who killed herself in Portugal six years previously. Against the wishes of her mother, Phoebe decides to take off to Europe and retrace Faith's final journey (using the postcards sent to her years before), in an attempt to piece together the mystery of her sister's death.
