Hans Brinker, the Dutch hero from the classic tale "Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates," comes to life in this beautifully crafted early BAPS doll. With his mother by his side, these vintage dolls from the 1940s capture the essence of Dutch folklore, handmade with precision and care by Edith Von Arps and Hilde Bartel.
The costumes of cotton and felt have many wonderful details, including multiple layers, beadwork, and embroidery. Baps dolls are the creation of Frau Edith Von Arps, who started by selling her dolls door to door. These sweet dollhouse sized dolls date to the 1940's through the 1960's. Baps dolls were made to represent fairy tales and nursery rhymes. As well, other dolls were dressed in various regional costumes, to be sold as souvenirs, such as this pair. Each little work of art is hand made and painted. Construction consists of a cloth covered head with handpainted features and cotton floss hair, and a wire armature body that is covered in felt. Exacting little stitches close the seams and finish the tiny garments. Most of the dolls have weighted metal feet that allow them to stand up without the aid of a doll stand.
