1850 Gold Rush Letter Cover Harrisonville,MO Jacksboro Campbell County Tn

Outstanding 9’ x 10 hand-written letter from Methodist minister Nathan King of Harrisonville, Missouri dated March 11^th 1850 concerning the California Gold Rush.
He writes to Mr. Thomas Weir a noted merchant of the city Jacksborough (Jacksboro) Campbell County Tennessee.

You probably would like to hear some of the general news of the country. The California gold fever is raging in this country. The preachers are quitting their charges the doctors their practices the lawyers the bar and the merchants their counting rooms and the farmers their cornfields. The cry is Ho ! FOR California !!! !about one half of the country talk of going to the gold diggers,”The price of land is very low in this country at this time. Good Oxen and mules are demanding extraordinary prices; oxen are worth fifty to seventy five dollars yoke mules from $50 to $100 dollars apiece.

*Additional information: Nathan, his wife Maqry,( Mary)  Isaac E, his 2nd son, and daughter Mary E. all died within a week of cholera in July of 1854 in Harrisonville, Missouri.
