Description
19th century Cabinet photograph showing an early Mecklenburg County, North Carolina scene. The building on the far left states: ADAMS EXPRESS office and the larger sign above the entrance way say’s: PHENIC OILS & SUPPLY. It appears everyone in the town was notified the photographer was scheduled to be there that day, children wearing no shoes along with men who looked like they just crawled out of a hollow along with carpetbaggers, farmers, outlaws and snake oil salesmen. In many ways it is such a wonderful rare image of early Carolina post-Civil War existence. God only knows what Phenic oil was claimed to do for you. And I bet it was likely 45 % alcohol and the rest embalming fluid. (As if there’s difference)
Roughly 4 ½ x 6 ½ inches; Identification on verso. 1880’s-90’s. *The price on the image is what I paid for the photo in 1987.
