Diedrich Knickerbocker was a fictional character created by Washington Irving. In 1809 Irving published ads concerning the whereabouts of the Dutch historian and his purported manuscript, A History of New York, which was a chronicle of the city's 50 years under Dutch rule in the 1600's that played fast and loose with the facts. This book propelled Irving to the heights of literary stardom.
