When King Tutankhamen's tomb was opened in 1922, some 50 alabaster jars designed to hold 350 liters of Perfume oil were discovered. While tomb robbers had stolen nearly all of the precious oils, some of the jars still contained remains of their original contents. What was found in the tomb?
Once inside the tomb, Carter found rooms filled with treasure. This included statues, gold jewelry, Tutankhamun's mummy, chariots, model boats, canopic jars, chairs, and paintings. It was an amazing discovery and one of the most important made in the history of archeology. In all, there were over 5,000 objects in the tomb. It took Carter and his team ten years to catalog everything.
His original name, Tutankhaten, means "the living image of Aten", while Tutankhamun means "the living image of Amun". In hieroglyphs, the name Tutankhamun was typically written Amun-tut-ankh because of a scribal custom that placed a divine name at the beginning of a phrase to show appropriate reverence.[7] He is possibly the Nibhurrereya of the Amarna letters, and likely the 18th-dynasty king Rathotis who, according to ancient historian Manetho, had reigned for nine years—a figure that conforms with Flavius Josephus's version of Manetho's Epitome.[8]
