This book brought to the American designer of mechanisms a new, highly diversified kit of tools to merge geometrically precise techniques to solve design problems. A bibliography of more than 2000 entries of kinematic literature from the 1930s forward was compiled so a designer might utilize a more sophisticated mathematical approach to his problem if necessary. xxiv + 727pp.
This second edition was the first edition translated into English from the original German language.
Dr.-Ing. E. h. Kurt Hain (1908-1995) was a pioneer of Applied Kinematics in Germany. He started his scientific career in his native town Leipzig. Between 1936 and 1994 he wrote 13 books, 380 scientific papers and designed 176 mechanism models. He worked in nearly all subfields of kinematics and machinery. There are notions, procedures and methods that are strongly connected with his name.
Dr. Thomas Paton Goodman (1926-1964), Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University and editor for this translation, died before completing that task. Dr. Douglas P. Adams, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, M.I.T. assumed the role of editor after Goodman's death.
In addition to the editors, translators included: F. R. Erskine Crossley, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology; Ferdinand Freudenstein, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Columbia University; Bruce L. Harding, Chief Development Engineer, H. F. Livermore Corporation; and Daniel R. Raichel, Principal Engineer, Maxxon Electronics Corporation.
