65th REGIMENTAL INFANTRY, NEW YORK NATIONAL GUARD, NAMED, GROUPING
This is a very nice grouping attributed to Captain Ambrose Stark Bixby, 65th Regimental Infantry, New York National Guard, Spanish American War.
Grouping consist of the following:
· Waist Belt Plate, New York Militia, Officer, Circa 1900
o Dimensions: 50 x 64 mm
o Construction: Gilt cast brass plate with applied tongue and belt loop bar, Script letters “NY” Due to the flash on the camera, the buckle appears to be silver. This is brass construction.
o Comments: Illustrated in the Warnock Uniform Company catalog of 1902. The New York firm began in 1838 and supplied goods during the Civil War. After changing ownership, Warnock closed following WWII. For reference, see: page 504, Plate 848, “American Military Belt Plates, Michael J. O’Donnell & J. Duncan Campbell.”
· New York Volunteers Medal
o This medal was awarded to volunteers from the state of New York who served in the Spanish American War and also part of the Philippine American War. Apparently, the medal was given to all volunteers, including army and naval militia. The obverse of the medal shows the army volunteer, in full gear, advancing on the foe. The reverse reads "Awarded by the State of New York To One Who Served the Nation With Honor 1898-1899-1900." The brooch is missing.
· New York National Guard Marksman Badge
o A very attractive gold-toned marksmanship medal. A 1” diameter medallion bearing the seal of the State of New York on the face and embossed with the legend “NATIONAL GUARD STATE OF NEW YORK” on the reverse. The medallion is suspended from two crested bars. The brooch and bar are both marked “TIFFANY”
· United States Volunteers, USV, Marksman, Ladder Badge
o A New York State Small Arms Practice Medal by Tiffany & Co - Red bronze, maker marked "TIFFANY & CO." on the reverse, obverse illustrating the New York State coat-of-arms surrounded by a ring inscribed "SMALL ARMS PRACTICE" and framed by an open-ended wreath, 37 mm, with six bronze clasps ( Year 13; Sharpshooter; I; Expert; I; 1898 USV), bronze eagle brooch inscribed "MARKSMAN" with pinback, clasps and hanger are linked to the medal via an elaborate hook system, light contact, extremely fine.
· New York State Ten Year Long and Faithful Service Medal
o The heavy, bronze solid medal is on a long neck red ribbon with a “10 Years” suspension device. The reverse of the medal is engraved in script “Captain Ambrose Stark Bixby”, also maker marked by “Tiffany & Co”, Serial Number “2387”
