Each year more than one million visitors come to discover or rediscover the charms of the spring which inspired Petrarch, the Italian poet, to write his most beautiful lines. Is it a whim of nature? A geological mystery? The spring, depending on the season, offers the disarming spectacle of Nature at times impetuous, at times calm. Here it is in summer: a quiet spring sleeping at the bottom of the abyss. There it is in winter and spring; a boiling gush of water bounding over the threshold of the overflow.
