"When our project began, we knew of 30 notable personalities who were former Marines. Remarkably, within a year, our list had grown to more than 200. . . . This book will highlight the civilian careers and military experiences of Marines who have earned national recognition as entertainers, writers and broadcasters. . . .Our research sources include newspaper and magazine articles, biographies, biographical dictionaries, combat memoirs and interviews. Sheet music and Marine Corps ads have also been added to enliven the text. There was no valid method to qualify a Marine for inclusion in this book. We did not intend to slight anyone accidentally omitted from this work and invite our readers to suggest names of noteworthy Marines who may warrant recognition in future editions. Books describing Marine Corps courage and valor are legion. Instead, we strove to focus upon ordinary Americans who have served in the Corps and moved on to achieve fame in their chosen fields of endeavor. The individuals highlighted in this book, like the Marine Corps itself, reflect America's social and cultural diversity" [from the Preface]. Contents: "Celebrity Marines"; "Hollywood And The Marines"; "Television And The Marines.
