A little bit of background on this book:  A friend of mine loaned me his hardcover edition during the summer of 1963, and I devoured it in one sitting -- even reading 'way into the wee hours of the following day!

The authors (reportedly) had based the book primarily upon the difficulties which Presidents DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER and then JOHN F. KENNEDY were having with U. S. Army General EDWIN A. WALKER, who had been indoctrinating troops using publications from the extremist right-wing political organization, THE JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY, forcing Walker to resign.  Walker actively campaigned against President Kennedy, and attempted to stir up race riots in Arkansas and Mississippi, and toured the country with leaders of other far-right conservative organizations.

BUT. . .little known to the authors, was that there actually HAD been an attempted coup in 1933 against President FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, which is historically referred to as "THE BUSINESS PLOT" or "THE WALL STREET PUTSCH," a clumsily contrived coup pieced together by a handful of corporate businessman and former U. S. Army officers, who believed that Roosevelt's domestic plans to control the ongoing financial depression in the United States, would be devastating for business interests.  Their intent was to convince a very popular military officer to lead several hundred thousand disgruntled World War I veterans down Pennsylvania Avenue, and overthrow the Roosevelt presidency, establishing the military officer as the new "Leader" of the United States, based largely upon the model of BENITO MUSSOLINI in Italy.  Fortunately for American democracy, the military leader whom they had chosen was U. S. Marine General SMEDLEY BUTLER, who (though a Republican), was also a staunch patriot -- and he blew the whistle on the whole plot, from which arose the first House Un-American Activities Committee gathering; and, though the HUAC meetings were held in secret, the threat of any more "BUSINESS PLOTS" was put on hold, until Roosevelt's death in 1945.

So I definitely recommend reading the book SEVEN DAYS IN MAY -- as well as watching the 1964 film version, with a screenplay written by ROD SERLING (of TWILIGHT ZONE fame), plus incredibly tight performances by KIRK DOUGLAS and BURT LANCASTER.
