FRONT COVER
"SALT RIVER TORRENTS" BY RAY MANLEY. 5x7 Linhof camera, Anscochrome, f.16 at i /5oth second; 8%" Schneider Sym-mar lens, spring of 1958, bright sunlight. Photo taken approximately one half mile up the Salt River from Salt River Bridge in Salt River Canyon on U.S. Go, 45 miles northeast of Globe. The Salt, which begins in the White Mountains, is a moody, impetuous river. At times it flows a mere trickle; then again it can be a rampaging torrent. After spring rains it will flow muddy and thick. At times it flows clear as crystal. The Salt on March 14, 1911, spilled 14o,000 acre feet of water into Roosevelt Lake and that was the spring the lake filled. The minimum flow recorded during 1913-1959 was on a day in July, 1955, when only a total of 59 acre feet per 24 hour day was pleasured.
