Steven Wright, the Confucius of Comedy, recorded his first album, I Have A Pony, in 1985. That Grammy-nominated album, along with an HBO special the following year, established Wright as one of the most inventive, peculiar and admired comedians of our era. Surreal and cerebral, his languid voice and deadpan delivery of ironic, witty and sometimes even deeply philosophical one-liners made him a unique and unforgettable performer. Now that classic, long unavailable album and that TV special are issued for the first time in a CD/DVD set that will introduce a new generation to a truly brilliant comic.

An excellent album by one of the funniest comedians ever. It's a live recording of one of his stand-up routines in front of an audience. The recording is very clear without too much background noise. This is the original, official album on CD from Warner Brothers and is not a bootleg copy. It is encased in a sturdy jewel case that was made before all of this 'we must minimize plastic' nonsense. It does have a couple of fittingly odd things about it considering that it's an album by one of the oddest comedians ever. :) The inside of the cover says "See other selections available inside this booklet.", but on the inside of the 'booklet' (which is one page folded over) there aren't any selections listed. This is because this was Steven's first album, but it's still weird that they put that line there. The other weird thing about it is that the disc is rather simply designed with the title and tracks' names in black in a basic font printed on a clear background. You can see the reflective layers inside the disc. Wright, if you've ever seen him perform in person, or on video, is also a rather no frills, basic looking guy with a deadpan delivery. Sometimes, his hair is a bit odd looking when it is long as he is bald on top with a fringe of hair around the sides and back, but otherwise, he looks and dresses like your average guy. The picture on the cover (which is the most elaborate part of the case) has a weird, warped chessboard background that fits his warped view of things. It must be an early picture because he's got more hair on top that how you usually see him. So, it fits that the CD is presented in a no frills way other than the strange cover. There are fourteen tracks and the run time lasts about an hour, which makes sense since most stand-up comedy specials aren't any longer than that. There's a ton of comedy gold packed into that 60 minutes though. Even the songs he writes and sings are funny and are not just filler to make the special longer. The album features his infamously weird one-liners and odd stories. In this special, he works them together so that one weird story sort of leads into the next one. What I appreciate most about Steven is that his jokes are, for the most part, cerebral. They make you think before you get the joke. He doesn't rely on outbursts of cursing, crude content, or sight gags (which is a good thing since this is an audio CD). His stuff is not weird in the sense of being nastily twisted in an 'oh that's just wrong' kind of way. His stuff is just enough off-center and departs just enough from normal thinking to make you go 'Wait, what? Did I hear him right?'. Luckily, since this on CD, you can back it up, or track back to hear the joke again. Unlike seeing him in person. I saw his stand-up in person when I was in college in 1995. After the concert, I was like 'Wow, that was really weird, but hilarious. I didn't fully understand half of what he was talking about but it was interesting. I've got to hear that again.'
