The game of the goose is a board game for two or more players. Each player rolls a die and advances his or her piece (according to the number obtained) along a snail-shaped board with 63 squares (or more), with drawings . Depending on the square on which the player lands, the player can advance or retreat, and some of the squares indicate a punishment or a reward. On each player's turn, he or she rolls 1 or 2 dice (depending on the different versions) that indicate the number of squares he or she must advance. The first player to reach square 63, "the garden of the goose", wins the game. History The first commercial versions of the game appeared in the 1880s and were decorated with motifs alluding to the period, such as children in period clothing. The first version is believed to have been a board game given by Francesco I de' Medici of Florence to Philip II of Spain between 1574 and 1587. The oldest known example of this game dates back to 1640, made of Venetian wood .
