Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) hits one of Cicely's ordinal citizens, 108-year-old Ned Svenborg (Roberts Blossom), with his truck and takes the injured man home for treatment. While recovering, Ned tells Joel and friends the bittersweet history of their small community. Once a lawless town intimidated by the mean Mace Mowbry (Barry Corbin) and his introspective sidekick, Kit (John Corbett), Cicely and its citizens are transformed upon arrival of two liberal women with plans to establish a free-thinking, egalitarian society, staring:

- SIDE TWO NORTHWEST PASSAGE
To come to terms with her 30th birthday, Maggie (Janine Turner) follows an Indian tradition by canoeing to a special spot along the river and composing messages to the people she has known. But her peaceful ritual goes awry when she contracts a terrible fever and suffers hallucinations about a barbeque attended her former, now dead boyfriends. Back in the town of Cicely, Alaska, Maurice (Berry Corbin) annoys everyone as he records his memoirs, and Marilyn (Elaine Miles) solicits driving lessons from the philosophical Chris (John Corbett). After a few sessions, however, Marilyn decides she'd rather walk. This memorable episode combines the humor and charm that has made Northern Exposure an entertainment phenomenon.
