Despite 2 successful trans-Atlantic flights from Germany to North America, Aviator WOLFGANG VON GRONAU failed to raise public interest in a commercial route to the USA. He therefore decided to repeat his journey for a 3rd time to improve the profile of the plan.

In July 1932, flying a twin-engine Dornier Wal seaplane called Gronland Wal with 3 other crew members: Gerth von Roth-copilot, Franzl Hack-mechanic & Fritz Albrecht-radio, he set off from Sylt in Germany, having already decided that a complete round the world flight would bring better publicity flying east to west around the globe. The flight headed across North America an on towards the Far East.

The Manila authorities issued an overprinted set of stamps to commemorate their successful arrival in the Philippines September 29th.
