Summary: Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle, became the first European to travel down the length of the Mississippi in 1682. He claimed the river and land around it for France, his native country. A few years later, La Salle set out on another expedition to reach the mouth of the Mississippi in the Gulf of Mexico to establish a new colony. Although his efforts failed, his expeditions paved the way for France to create the colony of Louisiana.
