The Powers of the Sphinx was developed by Aleister Crowley as a part of his own Thelemic pattern, and he incorporated them even into the instruction of the A.’.A.’. and the OTO secret societies.

Sphinx is composed of four Beasts that represent the Four Elements - the Fire, the Water, the Air, the Earth. Crowley connects them to the Four Emanations of Law: Life, Light, Liberty and Love.

„the Sphinx is an eidôlon of the Law,

for the Bull is Life,

the Lion is Light,

the Man is Liberty,

the Serpent /Dragon/ is Love."

Crowley identifies the Sphinx with the Magus, who utilizes the Powers of the Four Elements to become "a whole, Himself, containing all Things in true Proportion." The four Virtues of the Magus appears in the most powerful and balanced form they are - to Will, to Dare, to Know, to Keep Silence.

This then is the Magician!

"who doth Will with solid Energy as the Bull,

doth Dare with fierce Courage as the Lion,

doth Know with swift Intelligence as the Man,

and doth Keep Silence with soaring Subtlety as the Eagle or Dragon.”
