ABOUT THE SPEAKER (At time of this recording)
Dan Ingalls was the principal designer of four generations of the Smalltalk system: the archetypal object-oriented languae. He received the Grace Murray Hopper award for his work on Smalltalk and Bit-map graphics at Xerox PARC during the 1970s. In 1987, along with Alan Kay and Adele Goldberg, he received the ADM Software Systems award. Dan joined Apple Computer in 1984, where his most recent work has been in the area of visual programming languages, or "kits." LECTURE SUMMARY Complex Systems are hard to build with conventional programming languages. Object-oriented programming is an approach in which software organization corresponds closely to the system being simulated. Supplanting conventional procedure-calls with the more general mechanism of sending messages, it greatly enhances the flexibility and reusability of software components. At the end of the lecture, David Ungar, professor at Stanford University, joins Dan Ingalls in a discussion of object-oriented programming.
