THE COVER photograph of swimming champions Donna de Varona and Don Schollander was taken in Santa Clara by Jack Fields. Both swimmers were double winners in the 1963 National A.A.U. outdoor championships, Miss de Varona in the women's 200- and 400-meter individual medley, and Schollander in the men's 200- and 400-meter freestyle races.

THE AUTHORS. Although James Atwater drove nearly 1,600 miles throughout Mississippi to follow the civil-rights workers, he ran into trouble only once. After spending the night at a motel near Philadelphia, Miss., he was ordered to leave when the motel owner discovered who he was.The owner complained that journalists were down there just to harass the local citizens. . . . Contributing writer Edward Linn accompanied Jack Ruby's lawyer, Mel Belli, to lunch one day during the trial in Dallas, but they inadvertently walked into the restaurant where the jury was eating. Since Belli was not permitted to be in the presence of jurors away from the courtroom, he and Linn were forced to eat at a stand-up lunch counter around the corner. . . . Artist John Groth first became well-known for sketches made while he was a war correspondent in World War II and the Korean War. . . Editor-at- large Bill Davidson, while gathering material for the DMSO article, was given a dose of the drug for his bursitis. He said it seemed to help. . . . After spending several days with the man who eats weeds, Manhattan free-lance writer David L. Goodrich says even New York's Central Park now looks like one big salad.
