On DVD or VHS:
Once in a lifetime comes a spirited athlete of such extraordinary talent and charisma that he becomes the popular image of the sport in which he excelled and no matter what the sport, the debate is always the same, "who is greatest?" In the Olympic sport of showjumping many fabulous individuals come to mind: MILTON, FOR THE MOMENT, IDLE DICE, BIG BEN; but there's one name you'll hear more often than any other and that name is GEM TWIST. One look at his performance record tells you that this is no ordinary athlete; GEM TWIST has amassed more than forty career victories with total earnings in excess of $750,000.
GEM TWIST represented his nation in every worldwide competition known to modern sports - he's won medals in the Olympic and Pan American Games and he's even been voted best showjumper in the world for 1987, 1989 and 1992...no other horse has ever won this title three times!
In 1987 GEM TWIST helped Greg Best win the AGA "Rookie of the Year" title and they contributed to the USET'S Team Silver Medal in the Pan American Games. In 1988 GEM TWIST went to with Best and beat the most talented horses in the world on his way to winning two silver medals in the Olympic Games. These Olympic medals energized fans and made GEM TWIST an instant show celebrity.
How to describe his style: GEM TWIST loves to win and he loves to win at speed...the faster he goes, the higher he jumps and the unmistakable joy that he exudes in flight makes him irresistible. GEM TWIST does more than jump...he takes wing and his sheer enthusiasm for the game has captured the imagination of horse lovers around the world. The "Magnificent Grey" displays an uncanny intelligence about the sport of showjumping: the moment he lands he is already looking for the next fence...when the rider says, "turn"...he's already turned around!
What is it about GEM TWIST that makes him so extraordinary? For openers, he's a great grandson of the immortal foundation sire, BON OUI...GOOD TWIST, sire of GEM TWIST, was a small but unbelievably talented showjumper, so part of the reason GEM TWIST was always ready to win has been due to his heritage. GEM TWISTS's dam, COLDLY NOBLE, a Thoroughbred mare given to the Chapot family had shown moderate success on the race track; her speed augmented GOOD TWIST's athletic jumping ability. GEM TWIST also proved to be fast and athletic enough to carry on his family's winning tradition during the 1980's and 90's.
Frank Chapo, a six-time Olympic veteran and coach of the team is the breeder of GEM TWIST and the only trainer GEM TWIST has ever known; the horse was born in at Chapo's Chado Farms in 1979 and never left his careful hand. 's "Great Grey" has won both Horse-of-the-Year honors and the American Grand Prix Association National Championship three times - a record unmatched in the sport of showjumping!! But what is truly remarkable is that he accumulated these awards with three very talented but very different human partners.
Relive the astounding career of, "'s Great Grey", from his early years with Greg Best, through his record-breaking accomplishments with Leslie Burr Howard, to his triumphant comeback at 17-years-old with the brilliant rookie, Laura Chapot. The most prominent horsemen of our time will tell you that there are two tests of true greatness in a performance horse: 1) the magnitude of his career and 2) his ability to win with vastly different riders. GEM TWIST has not only met that criteria for greatness, he's become the standard by which it will be measured for all times. GEM TWIST has exhibited all of the greatest qualities that a showjumper requires: courage, heart, stamina, athleticism, power and maybe equally as important...a striking, showy and electric personality.
Once in a lifetime comes a stunning horse to capture the imagination of equestrian sports lovers the world over...once in a lifetime comes a GEM TWIST!
