With Bated Breath by Alice Campbell

This is the 1968 first printing of the Paperback Library Gothic Edition. Very rare book. Good condition for its age. Has been in a non-smoking home and has no water damage. There are creases on the spine, and light wear on the edges of the cover. There are two markings in the beginning of the book—one on the first page, and a name scrawled on the second page. There are no other markings throughout the book and no dog-ears. See photos for a more in-depth look.

The story is described as:

“A gripping, unnerving mystery of a gloomy English mansion with hidden rooms and unused tunnels, whose inmates are not at all above suspicion of three unsolved murders -- until Avis, the bright, curious American girl, in accidental, girl scout fashion, unravels the triple crime, after surviving several murder attempts and trying to prove the innocence of the killer. Here is a tense, foreboding stage of pathological characters -- Maud, owner of Turrets who wants her sister declared insane; Erica, the meek, spritely epileptic sister; Robin, adopted son with poor relation status and martyrish inclinations; and various hangers-on. Into this web goes scared but curious Avis, who shares her chills while keeping the reader off the right trail. Effective mystery atmosphere, with intricate multiple plot.”
