Item description
Vintage original "country of origin" German Ross Verlag postcard from the classic German silent film production of FAUST, released in 1926 by UFA and directed by F.W. Murnau. Based upon the play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the demon Mephisto (Emil Jannings) wagers with God that he can corrupt a mortal man's soul. The cast includes Gosta Ekman, Emil Jannings, Camilla Horn, Frida Richard, William Dieterle, Yvette Guilbert, Eric Barclay, Hanna Ralph, and Werner Fuetterer.
The images depicts a close shot of handsome Valentin (William Dieterle) in a playful moment with his sister, Gretchen (Camilla Horn). This unused "country of origin" postcard is in very fine- condition with light signs of wear on the tips of the corners and a light curl along the sides. There are no pinholes, tears, stains, or other flaws.
Director F.W. Murnau wanted Lillian Gish to play Gretchen, but she insisted that the film be shot by her favorite cinematographer, Charles Rosher. Murnau instead cast newcomer Camilla Horn, whom he had met on the set of Tartuffe, where she was a double for Lil Dagover. Leni Riefenstahl applied for the female lead role, but was turned down.
