Item description
Thanks for checking out my listing!
Up for grabs we have an Antique Civil War Era Wire Ecraseur Circa 1843-1890. An Ecraseur was a medical tool used to encircle and snare projecting masses of tissue, including uterine and ovarian tumors, hemorrhoids, testicles, and for removing the head from a dead fetus to facilitate delivery from a uterus. They work by encircling a bit of flesh with the chain or wire and gradually tightening it until the protuberance is strangled and falls off. Wire Ecraseurs are especially rare because they fell out of favor due to the fact they they could damage the surrounding healthy flesh.
This one is in great shape and has nice patina. The central shaft is a little gummed up with some dirt and who knows what else from years of use. I am not sure the exact year it was made, but I will present the findings of my research on this piece and let you draw your own conclusions.
I received this with another one that is nearly identical, except for a few differences, and I have included some side by side comparison photos. The other one has a makers mark of A.L. Hernstein, which is Albert Hernstein. Alberts father, Hermann Herstein, was a major maker and supplier of surgical instruments during the Civil War and operated from 1843-1865, when he went close his business. Albert reopened the business in 1967, rebranding it from Hernstein Son to A.L Hernstein. I believe that this Ecraseur is from his father's era based on two things: 1) The lack of maker's mark and 2) there is a "I" stamped in two places, where the A.L. Herstein one has a "II" stamped on it, indicating to me that "I" is earlier and "II" is later. That would put this between 1844-1965, but since this is conjecture and not verified information, I have listed the possible years as 1843-1890. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks for your interest!
