? The Art of Shu Embroidery — A 3,000?Year Legacy
What is Shu Embroidery?
Shu Embroidery, also known as “Chuan Xiu”, is one of the Four Great Embroideries of China, alongside Suzhou, Hunan, and Guangdong embroidery. Its history stretches back over 3,000 years to the ancient Shu Kingdom — silk traces found at the Sanxingdui archaeological site have rewritten what we know about early textile art. From the Han Dynasty’s “Silk Road” to the Tang Dynasty’s imperial courts, this craft has been cherished across cultures and continents. In 2006, Shu Embroidery was inscribed on China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List — a well?deserved recognition of its cultural significance.
What Makes This Piece Special — Double?Sided Embroidery
Unlike ordinary embroidery that you can only see from one side, this screen features double?sided Shu embroidery. On a single piece of transparent silk, the artisan stitches both sides simultaneously. Turn the screen around — the dragon head remains flawless, with no visible knots or loose threads. This is the most demanding form of Shu embroidery, a technique that takes years, even decades, to master.
? Why the Dragon Head? — A Symbol of Power and Good Fortune
In traditional Chinese culture, the dragon is the supreme auspicious creature. It rules over wind and rain, protects the people, and represents authority, wisdom, wealth, and prosperity.
Since ancient times, the dragon has been the emblem of emperors and nobility, but its blessings have never been confined to palaces. In ordinary homes, a dragon embroidery or a dragon screen carries the same heartfelt wishes: “May your home be safe and your career rise like a dragon soaring into the sky.”
Every scale is carefully shaded with silk threads to create a flowing, iridescent effect. The dragon’s eyes are bright and piercing; its whiskers seem to float in the wind — as if the dragon might leap off the silk at any moment.
This piece makes a wonderful gift for:
Housewarming — to protect the new home and bring lasting fortune
Business opening — may your success rise like a dragon
Elder’s birthday — wishing health and long life
Personal collection — a touch of Eastern elegance for your study or office
? May this dragon screen bring you and your family a year of good fortune and peace.
? How This Piece Is Made
Every dragon?head Shu embroidery screen is entirely handmade. Here is how it comes to life:
Step 1 — Pattern Drawing Framing
The artisan carefully outlines the dragon head on high?quality silk fabric, then stretches the silk tightly onto an embroidery frame. Every warp and weft must be perfectly straight — this is the foundation of double?sided work.
Step 2 — Thread Selection Color Matching
Depending on the different parts of the dragon, dozens of natural silk thread colors are selected. Silk threads are extremely fine — sometimes a single strand is split into 1/8 or even 1/16 to achieve the subtle shading of the dragon’s scales.
Step 3 — Double?Sided Embroidery
This is the hardest step. The artisan moves the needle back and forth through the transparent silk, ensuring that both the front and back are equally beautiful, with no fuzzy threads or exposed knots. A 20 cm dragon head often takes dozens of hours of concentrated work.
Step 4 — Mounting into the Partridge Wood Frame
Once the embroidery is finished, it is carefully stretched, mounted, and fitted into the Partridge wood frame. Partridge wood is known for its unique “V”?shaped grain that resembles bird feathers — a perfect natural companion to the delicate silk work.
Step 5 — Final Packing
The finished screen is placed into a custom?made brocade gift box, lined with soft padding to ensure safe delivery.
