Antique Cabinet Card Photograph. Identified as the Saint Croix Baseball Team Maritime Champions of 1957, from St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. Photo by Harvey Studios. Measures approximately 13.25 x 11.25 including mount. (Note: Our second photo is borrowed from a St. Stephen history page celebrating the team.) The team photo includes: Dick Canavan, pitcher; Phil McCarroll, utility; Phil McIntee, right field; Buster McLellan, catcher; Gerry Manuel, 3rd base and pitcher; Arthur MacLeod, utility; Arlo Hayman, manager; Grant Ross, catcher; Bill Cleghorn, center field and pitcher; the coach (unnamed); Jim Purcell, 1st base; Lloyd MacLeod, left field; Carl Scullion, 2nd base; Roddie MacMillan, short stop and pitcher; Jack Hayman, treasurer. Condition: This is an original photograph, not a copy or reproduction. It is in excellent condition. Comments: Back in the post-World War II era, St. Stephen was no ordinary baseball town. They didn't settle for just one outstanding ball team; they birthed a dynasty. The St. Croix Baseball Club emerged as a force to be reckoned with from 1957 to 1960, etching their name into the annals of New Brunswick sports history. In 1957 the St. Croix team from St. Stephen clinched the Border League Championship, triumphed in the provincial quarter-finals against Fredericton, and secured the Maritime Championship by rallying from behind in a double-header against Canning, Nova Scotia. The town celebrated this victory with a grand banquet, where past champions mingled with the new kings of the diamond.
