U.S. ARMY, CIRCA 1903, FIRST CLASS GUNNERS BADGE, COASTAL ARTILLERY, VINTAGE
98th CO COASTAL ARTILLERY
Made by Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois. Depicts two yellow gold cannons crossed at 90 degrees, each weapon slightly over 1.9 inches in length, with a silver-colored center square .65 inches on a side. This square bore a floating target remarkably similar to Captain Lyon?s never used 1891 gunner?s button. This entire badge is suspended from a black-edged brass rectangle. Production numbers are unclear, but the initial order placed in 1903 was for 1,700 badges, By 1906 Rock Island Arsenal reported a remaining stock of 525 Coastal Artillery Corps Badges, and there was no evidence of a reorder. This badge is in fine condition with a great deal of the original bright finish. This qualification badge is 120 years old.
Before issue, Rock Island Arsenal stamped all Coast Artillery Badges on the reverse of the rectangular brooch with the unit?s name, as in this case 98 CO COAST ART? on the top line and the owner?s unit on the second line, as in this case N0 60. The soldiers Company number was the means of identification of his web gear and lathe items which was unique to his Company.
The black and white photograph is not included and is being used to display how the badge was worn.
