Item description
Heirloom Organic Indian Corn Seeds (10)
Amazingly beautiful kernels, in a range of translucent, multi-colored shades.
Full Description
Zea mays. Gorgeous translucent, jewel-colored ears, each one unique. A stunning variety selected over many years by Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee farmer and breeder from Oklahoma. Selected from crossing several traditional corn varieties and saving seed from the vivid, translucent kernels. Gifted to NS/S by Bill McDorman who acquired the seed from Greg Schoen, one of Carl's students.
The kernels may be ground into cornmeal or popped.
Size of ears range from 3-8 inches.
Height of plants depend upon water, but can reach up to 9 feet, typically 6 feet.
Glass Gem can be harvested approx. 110-120 days after planting when the husks are dry and brown for the most intense and translucent colors.
โGlass Gemโ is a stunning variety selected by Oklahoma farmer Carl Barnes, who began growing heirloom native American corn as a way to a reconnect to his native American heritage. This vibrant ornamental corn was selected from crosses made from several Pawnee miniature corn varieties and a red Osage variety called โGreyhorseโ. Kernels are amazingly beautiful, in a wide range of translucent, multi-colored shades. The ears and stalks are great for ornamental use; the kernels may be used to make popcorn or ground into cornmeal for tortillas.
Ears are 8 to 10" long with beautiful colors of white, orange, purple, blue, red, and gold kernels. Rainbow ornamental corn makes a great fall and Halloween decoration. Open Pollinated.
Days to Maturity: 110
Approximate Seeds per Pound: 1863
